This pencil is one of only two Conté branded leadholders I've seen. The other is much less interesting and dates from probably the 1970s. In 1960 Conté merged with Gilbert & Blanzy-Poure to become Blanzy-Conté-Gilbert and so joined in the production of Gilbert's Criterium leadholder which from then on became the Conté Criterium.

This double ended pencil contains a waxy Conté branded lead. When I was in art school I remember hearing of, but never using, Conté Crayons. Perhaps this is a mechanical Conté Crayon?
