This is a unique holder for slate leads. It was packaged in a wooden box with several spare leads. The barrel appears to be a hardwood such as birch and the end is painted pink in an apparent attempt to suggest an eraser or possibly red cedar. Slate is very hard compared to graphite and was used in grade schools. The leads would last a very long time.
