This is my attempt to compile a comprehensive list ofdrafting leadholder models and brands. There have been a few changes in the list since it began: lead pointers and lead have been removed from the list, they may return someday; brands that do not include drafting leadholders have been removed (I can't keep up with all the cheesy sketching leadholders popping up—enough is enough), so makers such as Koh-I-Noor will have their sketchers listed, but brands such as Delta can shove off. Some of the company names have been inferred from the markings on leadholders, and so may be inaccurate. Products in this list that are part of the Leadholder collection are linked to the Galleries. If you have a leadholder not on this list, by all means, contact me and I'll add it. This list does not include thin lead leadholders. The information in the description column is primarily to distinguish between similar items. Unless otherwise indicated, leadholders and lead are 2 mm size.

Alteneder Theodore Alteneder & Sons, Philadelphia
Theodore Alteneder was an instrument maker who immigrated to the United States and set up his own shop in Philadelphia in 1850. The company ceased operating in the 1970s. Update 02.2006: There seems to be a website up at theo.alteneder.com.

Alvin was founded after World War II as an importer of German made drawing instruments. They continue to import and sell instruments branded with the Alvin name although no longer from Germany exclusively.

American Pencil Co. New York City
The American Lead Pencil Co. originated in 1861. Their popular Venus brand was initiated in 1905. By 1919 it was being advertised as "the largest selling quality pencil in the world." In 1956 the company name was changed to Venus Pen and Pencil Corporation. In 1967 the company acquired the Esterbrook pen company and was renamed Venus-Esterbrook, Inc. Between 1970 and 1973 assets were sold to Berol and Faber-Castell who kept the trademarks.

Conté France
The Conté company merged with the maker of the Criterium leadholder, Gilbert Blanzy-Poure, in 1960. The company was renamed Blanzy-Conté-Gilbert. In 1979 that company was bought by BIC.

Eugene Dietzgen Co. was founded in 1890. They were an importer and manufacturer of drawing tools etc. The company is still in operation today as a manufacturer of reproduction papers. The tool component of the business was sold off in 1985.

Dixon Joseph Dixon Crucible Co., USA
1827 company founded (did not produce pencils until 1870s). Introduced their American Graphite Polygrade pencils in the 1870s. These pencils had a natural cedar finish and were graded from VVVS (very, very, very soft) to VVVH (hard). In 1917 The Dixon Eldorado was introduced and graded in the now familiar European style of 2B, B, HB, H, 2H, etc. In 1983 the company merged with the Bryn Mawr Corporation and became the Dixon Ticonderoga Company. They are now owned by the Italian company Fila.

Eagle Pencil Company founded in New York City in 1856. Renamed Berol in 1969, at this time included Venus-Esterbrook and Apsco. Bought by Empire in 1986 to become Empire Berol of Tennessee. Then bought by Sanford of Oakbrook, Illinois. Which has since been bought by Newell-Rubbermaid.

Faber-Castell, A.W. Stein, Germany; Newark, New Jersey
Established in 1760 by Kaspar Faber in Stein, Germany. The name was changed to A.W. Faber in 1784 when Kaspar's son took over operations. In 1837 A.W. Faber introduced the "Polygrade," the first pencil with consistently graded lead, ranging from BB to HHH. 1851 branch of A.W. Faber established in NYC. The green Castell pencil was introduced in 1906. The American branch of the company's assets including US patents were seized in 1917 and incorporated in New Jersey as A.W. Faber, Inc. After WWII (c. 1946) the US company was renamed A.W. Faber-Castell Pencil Company, Inc. In 1973 the US Faber-Castell company acquires the remains of Venus-Esterbrook and changes name to Faber-Castell Corporation. The German Faber-Castell bought its US namesake sometime between 1973 and 1990.

This company began as the American branch of A.W. Faber of Germany, but was incorporated in 1898 as the E. Faber Pencil Co. In 1904 the company was reincorporated as Eberhard Faber Pencil Co. At some point in the early to mid-20th century, a German subsidiary was formed. In 1988 the US Eberhard Faber company was bought by A.W. Faber. The German Eberhard Faber company was acquired by Staedtler in 1978.

Koh-I-Noor L&C Hardtmuth
Various companies at times operating independently make up this brand. A not necessarily inclusive list is: Austria (L&C Hardtmuth AG), Bohemia/Czechoslovakia/Czech Republic (L&C Hardtmuth AS), Great Britain (L&C Hardtmuth of Great Britain Ltd.), USA (Koh-I-Noor Pencil Company, Koh-I-Noor Rapidograph), Italy (Koh-i-Noor Tribuna Economica). Founded 1790. L&C Hardtmuth introduced the Koh-I-Noor pencil in 1893. Supplies in the US were cut off for four years during WWI. To prevent this from happening again, a US branch, Koh-I-Noor Pencil Company, Inc., was opened in 1919 in New Jersey. In 1938 a manufacturing plant was opened, also in New Jersey, to avoid the high tarrifs of imported pencils. At some point in the 20th century – best guess, early 1950s – the Czech Hardtmuth bought the Toison d'Or pencil company and continues to sell this brand. The Bohemia Works brand was established in 1957, I presume, as a means for the Czech company to export to countries such as the US that had the Hardtmuth and Koh-I-Noor names being used by others. This is probably also the reason for the Grafo brand. I believe the German company rotring bought the US Koh-I-Noor pencil factory in the 1970s and it was renamed Koh-I-Noor Rapidograph. This company was then bought by Sanford (see Eagle Turquoise) in the 1990s or early 2000s. I'm not sure what happened then, but some of the US Koh-I-Noor assets seem to have been sold to the US company Chartpak which continues to sell Technical pens with the Koh-I-Noor name. The US Koh-I-Noor company as a maker/distributor of pencils no longer seems to exist in any form. If you're still reading this, email me and I'll send you a present. Really. According to figures I've seen somewhere, the Italian Hardtmuth has (as of 2003) 30% of the Italian pencil market. I'm not sure if any of the Italian Koh-I-Noor leadholders are currently distributed in the US as they had been since the 1950s. The Austrian L&C Hardtmuth AG was closed in 1992. Assets from the company were sold to Cretacolor which continues to sell some of the same products.
